The 2010 senior class is exceptional with many gifted and dedicated athletes. They have left their mark in each ICHS athletic sport, and they will be missed. An important mark they will be leaving is their dedication to give one’s best whether on the playing field or the practice field.
Irwin is 1-A and has signed four athletes to continue playing their sport on the college level. Fred Marshall (Presbyterian University) and Terrance Woodard (Georgia State) will be leaving in a few weeks to begin football summer training. Jake Atkinson and Clint Paulk signed baseball scholarships with Andrew College.
ICHS is very fortunate to have several talented, young athletes. The large number of graduating seniors will leave vacancies that will affect each sport. Coaches are excited about the returning talent and the number of rising eighth-graders who have shown capability in numerous athletics. Fortunately, many athletes from the junior class have talent and leadership qualities to assist the underclassmen in areas where needed.
Irwin will have to fill many vacant positions on all teams except for Lady Indian Basketball (the only team with no seniors) but so far, the future looks good. Coaches and fans applaud the seniors for all they have given to ICHS and look forward to a bright and successful 2010-2011 on Indian fields, courts, mats and courses.
Coach Chuck Folker began coaching the cross country teams in 2007 and each year either the girls and/or boys teams have advanced to state competition. Morgan Dowd and Kelsey Graham were named to the cross country All-Region team this year.
Irwin County had two talented seniors to be named to the 2009 Sportswriters All-State Team: linebacker Fred Marshall and special teams returner Kevious Robinson.
Several players made the 2A All-Region football team, including First Team honorees running back Kevious Robinson, defensive back Fred Marshall, defensive lineman Terrence Woodard, and fullback Bernard Baker. Second Team honors went to defensive lineman Eric Lawton, tight end/linebacker Jeremy Martin, defensive back Joequan Riley, offensive lineman Joe Ben Wright, linebacker Darious Battle, all-purpose defense Kenny Richardson, and running back Jake Atkinson. Honorable Mentions went to quarterback Clint Paulk, and linebackers Bradley Tucker and Luke Rineair.
Irwin County High School's Competition Cheerleaders, "The Red Hots," advanced to state for the 13th consecutive year. They completed their regular season with second place in a very competitive Region 1-A.
We also had several members of the ICHS softball team make it to All-Region this year. First Team honors went to Kaylee Wynn, Jena Fussell and Kelsey Graham, and Second Team honors went to Christy Mixon, Brittany Allen, Savanna Wright and Jakedra Pruitt. Of the 20 young ladies on the team, 12 are Scholar Athletes. The Lady Indians have at 91.4 team overall grade point average.
The boys basketball season was not as they had wanted, but they played hard and had two to make the All-Region team: Travis Tucker, Honorable Mention; and Jeremy Martin, Second Team.
The Lady Indian basketball team played their way into the first round of state, falling to a tough Seminole County team. The ICHS team is young with no seniors and looking ahead to next season. Members of the All-Region Team were Anissa Collins, First Team; Shay Robinson, Second Team; and Savanna Wright, Honorable Mention.
Irwin's two senior wrestlers qualified for state competition for two consecutive years. Joe Ben Wright placed in 2009 and 2010. Kenny Richardson placed in 2009. Overall, the team completed the season fifth at Area and 18th at State out of 38 schools competing.
The girls and boys tennis teams advanced to the Sweet 16 of Region 1A and round 2 of state competion. The teams played tough but were defeated. Tennis athletes named to the All-Region team were Wes Elrod, Molly Roberts and Nikki Hall.
Irwin's soccer teams have become known around the state in a very short time through the coaching of Bruce and Dana Willis and Jarred Luke. Soccer was added to our athletics program in 2007; the first year the teams played as junior varsity. During the past three years of varsity competition, the teams have made a name for themselves and advanced to state competition. Junior Savanna Wright was named Region/Area A/AA Player of the Year. Several members were named to the All-Region/Area Teams. Girls First Team honors went to Keeper/Goalie Kaylee Paulk, Kelsey Graham, Morgan Dowd, Nikki Hall, Savanna Wright and Jordan Dowd, and Second Team went to Jena Fussell, Diana Guerrero, Tori Hood and Anslie Paulk. Making the Boys First Team were Wes Elrod and Jesse Cribb; Second Team honors went to Eric Guererro and Dalton Gray; and Honorable Mention went to Aaron Jones and David Satterfield.
The track team saw outstanding performances by State 1A High Jump Champion Travis Tucker, who earned his first Gold Medal at the Georgia Olympics with a 6' 6" jump. Travis then earned silver medals in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 49.09 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 39.20 seconds. Travis was recognized as the Top Scorer in 1A with a total of 26 points scored and earned Irwin County another top 10 boys track finish in the state with seventh place. The previous week Travis qualified for state at region by placing first in the above events and was Region 1A High Points Scorer with 30 points.
ICHS senior Jake Atkinson had an outstanding year, earning the title of Region 1A East Player of the Year. He was on top of his game when pitching, he played exceptional defense at varied outfield positions, and his bat was hot with a .400-plus batting average. But Jake is quick to say, "It takes the team to win ballgames!" Advancing to the state Elite Eight this year for the first time in over a decade, the wins have been “team victories.”
Head Coach Pete Snyder (third from left) congratulates his seniors for earning 1A East All-Region Team. 1A East Player of the Year- Jake Atkinson, Catcher-Trey Portier, Coach Snyder, Outfield/Pitcher- Clint Paulk, Infield-Bradley, Infield-Justin Roberts, Honorable Mention- Luke Rineair, and Infield- Ryan Tucker.

Congratulations to the 2010 Indians after winning the sub-region championship for the first time since 2000 with a victory over Clinch County 14-5. Coaches and fans agree it was a team effort win. All opportunities were taken advantage of that came the team’s way. They moved runners and got a critical two strikes and two-out hits. The defense made very good plays, specifically the double play in the seventh turned by Ryan Tucker and Justin Roberts. Head coach Pete Snyder said, "The game was a team effort with every player having a part in the win. With regard to the season as a whole, I'm proud of the way the guys have conducted themselves; their ‘team first’ attitude and focused mindset have been outstanding.” Coaches Franklin Sumner, Chip Rankin and Wesley Scarbary have also done an outstanding job in keeping everyone focused and continually working to better the team. Long time Irwin baseball coach, Franklin Sumner added, "The team has worked and deserve to be the Sub-region Champions."

Jake Atkinson and Clint Paulk have signed baseball scholarships with Andrew College. The seniors have helped lead the Indians to a 10-1 region record, and the sub-region title. Clint and Jake were both signed as pitchers, and Jake is to see some outfield duties, also. Clint has two wins, three losses and one save with 32.1 innings pitched, 38 strikeouts and a 2.81 ERA; he graduates with a .262 batting average, .492 on-base percentage, 11 hits, and eight RBIs. Jake has nine wins, zero losses, and one save with 33.2 innings pitched, 45 strikeouts and a 1.25 ERA with a .379 batting average, .419 on-base percentage, 26 hits, 19 runs, eight doubles, two homeruns and 17 RBIs.

Both girls and boys golf teams are in the process of making up matches that were canceled due to inclement weather earlier in the season. This year, coach Chris Young scheduled matches with larger schools, including a 5-A school, which gave Irwin their only loss (their season record to date is 7-1).
Coach Young feels the experience gained by playing bigger schools will better prepare his team for the tournaments ahead. The girls team is small in numbers but strong in determination, and they have worked hard and improved in many areas. ICHS would like girls to become more interested in golf; the past several years the girls team has been very small.
Coach Young said, "Boys golf is working hard to defend our back-to-back region championships. Like all other sports we practice and we compete, but Indian practicing and competing is very serious right now. We want the third straight region title for ICHS." The boys are led by senior Matt Johns, who has been shooting near par all season. Matt is backed up by seniors Clae Wynn, Zachary Miller and Chandler Rowe.

Irwin County High School soccer teams entered their fourth season this year. Both teams played junior varsity their first year, and entered varsity in 2008. Coach Bruce Willis and his teams have come a long way in just three seasons. The 2010 season brings high hopes for his seniors that began their soccer careers as freshmen. Coach Willis said, "The girls team has been playing outstanding soccer, and we have not been plagued with bad injuries. The good is we have nine experienced seniors leading the team, the bad is we will really miss them next year. I must add, we do have some extremely athletic underclassmen that have worked hard and have really come a long way this season under the guidance of our seniors."
The team plays as a team, assisting and getting the job done. The girls are currently 14-1 and tied for first place in Region 2-A. Leading the ladies in scoring is senior Morgan Dowd, with 22 goals and 10 assists and junior and Savanna Wright, with 19 goals and 14 assists. At the goal is junior Kaylee Wynn, who has split time with Anslie Paulk. Kaylee has a record of 11-1 and Anslie has a record of 3-0. Kaylee has also scored 13 goals with 11 assists. Senior Jena Fussell has added to the offense by scoring 11 goals with 13 assists. The girls are playing hard to advance to the state level for the second consecutive year.
The boys team has had a difficult season, losing experienced athletes before the season began and losing others during the season. They have the energy and determination but have had problems throughout. Coach Willis said, "The team has worked hard this season but losing so many in the lineup has caused positions to change weekly. All the changes would be difficult for even a very experienced team." If a team has ever had heart and love for the game it is the remaining athletes on the Indian boys soccer team.
Coach Willis, along with his strong assistant coaches, Dana Willis and Jarred Luke, have come a long way in their three completed seasons. He began with many athletes that had never even seen a soccer game, much less played in one. Coach Willis has observed how the sport has grown, not only with his young inexperienced teams of 2007, but the fans and supporters have grown each season as well. Overall, soccer is growing in Irwin County.
The recreation department has also added soccer to their sports lineup, and Coach Willis has many middle school athletes that would like to play. Coach Willis would like to have a middle soccer program, but unfortunately there are no schools in the region that fields middle soccer to schedule games.

Baseball, tennis, soccer, golf and track are well on their way and keeping athletes extremely busy at Irwin County High School. As a Region 1-A school, many athletes participate in more than one sport, especially tennis and soccer. Coaches are juggling practices and working toward the athletes being able to compete in both sports. Weather has also complicated things this year; coaches have dealt with rain, sleet, snow, and very little sunshine to date. Practices and games have been cancelled and rescheduled, disrupting the season.
Irwin's boys track and field team returns with some essential experience. Coach Greg Revis is proud of the way his seasoned athletes blend with his young, inexperienced athletes. Returning state qualifiers are senior Travis Tucker (high jump, 300-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash), senior Terrence Woodard (shot put) and some members of the relay teams. Coach Revis said, "Many on our team this season are inexperienced. We lost numerous key athletes to graduation. The 2010 team is developing and will be noticed on the track and on the field."
Fortunately for the Indians, they now have a home track and field for practice and will be hosting most of their regular season meets. With hard work and fortitude, the team is discovering their endurance and using their talents to accomplish their personal best for their competitive events.
The Lady Indian track team is led by coach Leigh Chestnutt. “This is the first year I've coached track in 16 years, having concentrated on basketball and softball, so I am relearning the sport with my girls," she said. Coach Chestnutt has much to offer her athletes, beginning with determination and team discipline. The team has two seniors, Tiffani Martin and Kelsey Graham, who offer well-earned experience and leadership to their younger teammates. "We have a lot of potential this year. My girls are working hard and continuing to concentrate on conditioning and technique,” said Coach Chestnutt. “Many of my athletes are training for new events, so it is hard to predict how well we will do. I can say the team is eager to learn and working hard.”
Indian varsity tennis entered the season on cold courts. Both teams are being led by four-year letter seniors Mollie Roberts, Wes Elrod and Turner King. "The cold weather has been difficult for the teams, but the girls and boys have a 4-1 record as of March 3,” said coach Luke Roberts. Singles players Mollie Roberts and Nikki Hall have proven to be standouts in Region 1-A. In boys singles, Wes Elrod (No. 1), Turner King (No. 2), and Jarrett Schalch (No. 3) are one of the best singles combinations in the region. The girls are defending their five consecutive region championship wins while the boys’ two-year region championship streak was broken last season. Coach Roberts said, "Our teams are young. I am very proud of their hard work ethics, especially considering the extreme weather they have had to practice and play.” Both teams are striving for region championship wins in 2010.
Middle school tennis and new coach Brian Shedd are in full swing. The girls team is very young and getting great experience to prepare them for the years to come by facing a tough region schedule. Seventh-grader Madison Carlton is No. 1 singles with Summer Pridgen and Maggie Martin playing at No. 1 doubles. The boys have a strong team with a great deal of returning talent as well as fresh, young faces. Bryan Tucker and Cole Harper round out the top two singles spots, with talented sixth-grader Matthew Tucker playing No. 3 singles. Coach Shedd said, "Our young talent is maturing at a good pace, and added to our returning talent, these teams will be a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the season."
Indian baseball puts three teams on the field: varsity, junior varsity and middle school. Irwin fans are looking forward to successful seasons. The varsity team has seven very experienced seniors returning: Pitchers Clint Paulk and Jake Atkinson looked promising during preseason practice, Trey Portier moved to catcher, Luke Rineair moved to third, Bradley Tucker and Justin Roberts remain at first and second, and Ryan Tucker in left field. The varsity not only boasts experienced seniors; the team is well-balanced with their experienced underclassmen. The JV returns a few familiar faces but has many new athletes on the roster. Head baseball coach Pete Snyder said, "JV is where an athlete gains experience and our young players are really stepping up to the plate. I also applaud the senior leadership. Our teams are hardworking teams, and we all – coaches and players – feel good about our season ahead."
Middle baseball opened the season with many new players and a new coach. Coach Glenn Hudson is not new to the game of baseball; he has coached all phases of the game from recreation to the varsity level. The team does have returning players and the sixth-grade members have played their way up from the recreational program. Coach Hudson is a good, fundamental coach, and the team will learn on the practice and playing fields with him as their guide. As of March 9 their record is 4-2.

Irwin County had two talented seniors to be named to the 2009 Sportswriters All-State Team: linebacker Fred Marshall and special teams returner Kevious Robinson.
Fred’s 2009 season included 83 tackles, 24 assists and 14 passes broken up, not to mention three interceptions, two sacks and three forced turnovers. Kevious had 17 returns for 521 yards (averaging 30.65 yards per return) with three touchdowns.
Coach John Gamble said, "If our opponents had not stopped kicking to Kevious, there is no telling how many yards and TDs he would have put in the books."
In addition to returns, Kevious had 128 carries for 1134 yards, and 15 rushing touchdowns.
These two outstanding athletes will be missed.

ICHS head football coach John Gamble recently announced at the Indians' annual Football Awards Banquet that 14 members of the 2009 team were named to the Region AA All-Region team.
Selected for First Team were running back Kevious Robinson, defensive back Fred Marshall, defensive lineman Terrence Woodard and fullback Bernard Baker. Second Team selections were defensive lineman Eric Lawton, tight end /linebacker Jeremy Martin, defensive back Joequan Riley, offensive lineman Joe Ben Wright, linebacker Darius Battle, all-purpose defense Kenny Richardson (not pictured), and running back Jake Atkinson. Honorable Mentions went to quarterback Clint Paulk, and linebackers Bradley Tucker and Luke Rineair.
Coach Gamble ended the presentation by saying, "For a single-A football program to have this many players to make the All-Region team is outstanding. The only bad thing is 10 are seniors; the good thing is the returning four are good athletes and will be good leaders."

Irwin's varsity basketball cheerleaders specialize in "spirit" for their Indians with cheers and chants during the games. During the boys' halftime at each home game, they perform a combination of step, cheer and dance.
The girls' cheering is popular with Indian fans and the teams; they have even received requests for special cheers. Their halftime spirit routines have become a hit with a new spirit combination for each home game.
They say it loud and say it clear - GO INDIANS!

It has been a trying season for Coach Folker and the Indians. The team entered the season with high expectations, but losing players to injuries and an automobile accident has hurt them.
Going into the end of the season, the Indians are down to six varsity players and Coach Folker has had to pull from the junior varsity team to fill his roster. The Indians begin the game strong, but lose pace in the later quarters.
The Indians are being led by a strong senior, Travis Tucker. Coach Folker said, “Travis has been instrumental in keeping the team together with his encouragement and determination.”
The young Indians have learned to overcome obstacles with the help from Travis and other seniors, Tarus Edwards and Steven Bussy. Coaches and fans will tell anyone that this team has heart.

Coach Bruce Willis and assistants Dana Willis, Jarred Luke and Evelyn Lewis are here to stay. There have been far too many coaching changes in the past five years.
The last season opened with many inexperienced players, and Coach Willis began his rebuilding program. The hard work has made a difference. Irwin’s young 2009-10 team might not have any seniors, but they have determination, drive and are very competitive.
Going into the last week of regular season games the girls are playing better than .500 and are third in Region 2-A. Coach Willis’ Lady Indians are looking forward to the challenges of tournament play.

February 2010
Irwin County opened the 2009-2010 season with many changes. Coach Greg Revis lost all but two of his starting team to graduation and extensive injuries. The team opened the season with all weight classes filled, but with little or no varsity experience.
Assistant Coach Ray Pierce said, "Nothing is better for a young athlete than competitive experience. Experience is the name of the game. On the up side the wrestlers will be gaining competitive experience, on the down side many will be wrestling junior and senior athletes.”
Coach Revis added, "We just do not want our young team to get discouraged early in their varsity careers.”
Freshman Sam Tucker (weight class 189) is a well-conditioned athlete and has wrestled for years on the recreation teams and the IC Middle School team. Due to his size, he is wrestling older, more experienced athletes. Sam is doing a good job for the Indians with wins and pins in his column. "This is what I have been working toward. When the whistle blows, I come out wresting with the best I have,” said Tucker.
Irwin's two experienced team members and state contenders, senior Kenny Richardson and junior Michael Harrison, are having good seasons on and off the mats. On the mats, they are wrestling to win. Off the mats, they are helping the team with encouragement, technique and advice on what has worked for them.
Injured senior Joe Ben Wright, another state contender, is the behind-the-scenes leader. Joe Ben underwent surgery due to a late-season football injury, with hopes he will be able to get back on the mats. Until then, Joe Ben continues to be an important part of Indian wrestling.
Coach John Tuggle's Middle School wrestlers have had an outstanding season. To date, the team is undefeated with only two meets to complete the schedule. Coach Tuggle has opened the door for real competitive wrestling; many of the opposing teams are from much larger schools. His young grapplers do not seem to mind - they enter the mats eager to get the job done, with a win or a pin!

January 2010
The Irwin County varsity basketball cheerleading squad began in 2000 with six cheerleaders. They were small in number, but they were mighty on the court and in the stands. The ICHS basketball cheerleaders are strictly a “spirit” squad. They cheer, they chant, they step, they stomp and they dance. And…they get the job done!
The original six set the standards for Irwin’s future basketball cheerleaders – there is technique and there is loud. Not only do the Indian basketball teams know their cheerleaders are cheering for them, the fans are very aware of the gyms “spirit corner.” Coach Folker, the boys’ basketball coach, once said: “Our cheerleaders get everyone’s attention. Sometimes when the girls are cheering, there just happens to be a basketball game in progress on the court also.”
The squad continues to be coached by the original coaches: Sandy McClurd, Kathleen Bryant and assistant Jenelle Ellison. The coaches agree − basketball cheerleading is to be fun for the girls and definitely all about spirit. Each year the girls structure new cheers, chants and routines to add to their cheer catalog, another standard set by the first squad. The squad is now limited to 10 members, with the standing rule that anyone who would like to be a member of the girls’ basketball team has the opportunity to play basketball and cheer for the boys’ game.
Going into squad’s tenth year, the teams can boast of four girls being a member of the squads during all four years of their ICHS careers. The 2009-2010 squad is the youngest group yet; all but three girls graduated, making the composition extremely young with some girls cheering for the first time. Returning members Shakydra Austin, Itiesha Johnson and Katrina Harris have worked with the new team members and the squad is getting stronger each week.
Coach McClurd said, “There is one thing we coaches have learned the past ten years − the cheerleaders are very loyal and dedicated to their basketball teams. In the good times and in the bad times, they stand by their teams!”
The ICHS Basketball Cheerleaders are looking forward to cheering their Indians to a victorious 2009-2010 season.

December 2009
Irwin County High School’s Competition Cheerleaders, “The Red Hots” advanced to state for the 13th consecutive year. They completed the regular season with second place in a very competitive Region 1-A.
These girls divide their time; on Friday nights they are on the sidelines cheering for their Indians and on Saturdays, bright and early, they are traveling to compete against some of South Georgia’s most competitive cheer squads. The squad and coaches have had to overcome a season of untimely injuries. This meant last-minute changes in the competition routine, sometimes with a very short time to practice. The team’s roster of 16 athletes is fortunate to have the leadership of seven experienced seniors.
Head cheer coach Jeannie Pujadas has coached ICHS cheerleaders for the past eight years, and her squads have competed at state each year. A former IC competition cheerleader, Jessica McCurdy has assisted the past six years. Together they have led their squads to three consecutive region championships, and numerous second place honors in region. Together the coaches and the squad create a winning team. They enter the state competition with high confidence and high hopes.

Coach Chuck Folker’s cross country teams are making a name for themselves in Region 1A. The rebuilding began in 2006; the teams were small and young but dedicated to working hard and it was a historical year. The girls’ team was the first in ICHS girls cross country to ever qualify for the state meet.
The 2007 girls and boys teams also went in the history book as both teams, for the first time, qualified for state the same season. The 2008 season ended with injuries and even though the team roster was not complete, Irwin’s four remaining team members ran knowing the team did not qualify to place. Morgan Dowd placed third individually and did qualify to be a state runner as one of the 1A All-Region team members, making Morgan the only cross country runner from Irwin County.
Entering 2009, both cross country teams anticipated a successful season. With larger numbers on the teams, Coach Folker scheduled Irwin against challenging 5A teams, but things just did not end as Irwin had planned. The girls did finish second in region, qualifying the team for state. Morgan Dowd finished fourth and Kelsey Graham finished sixth, and both made the girls All-Region 1A team.
The state meet in Carrollton is a difficult, hilly course for the South Georgia teams that are accustomed to running on flat courses. Irwin’s girls did not place, but the team and Coach C take much pride in each team member who crossed the finish line. They definitely were not last. As for next season, Coach C and the team will be doing some rebuilding as they will be losing three dedicated seniors: Morgan Dowd, Kelsey Graham and Will Elrod.
Coach Folker said, “Our teams have grown each season, and I am especially pleased with our Middle School teams. Yes, we will miss our seniors, but they have been a great influence on the young team members and helped with fundamentals and basics. We are losing strong runners, but we have some young members stepping up and moving up that are dedicated and work hard. We are looking toward next season and plan to work to meet our goal for both teams to qualify to run in the 2010 state meet”.

November 2009
This season opened with the largest cross country roster ICHS has had for a while. Both teams enter their second season in Region 1-A with goals for region championships. The teams are young again this year with only two seniors; Morgan Dowd leads the girls and Wes Elrod leads the boys. Coach Chuck Folker said, “Morgan and Wes are two outstanding, competitive leaders. They are doing a good job supporting and encouraging the varsity teams and the youthful middle school teams.”
Morgan, an outstanding runner, has competed on the state level for the past two years. She is expected to compete for the individual region championship and return to the state meet again this year. Morgan was named to the 2008 All-Region cross country team.
Coach Folker scheduled the varsity and middle teams in meets at 5A high schools. Coach C said, “I have been pleased with the varsity’s numbers; finishing in the middle is not bad for an A school competing against all larger schools. The middle teams have done well, also. With each competition, they gain knowledge and skill experience. Coach C added, “Middle School is where it all begins, they are the foundation for our future varsity.”
Coach Folker has been pleased with the 2009 season and cross country’s future at ICHS. Each year the teams grow in numbers and experience. Region competition will be October 21, and both the girls and boys teams are working to advance to the state meet on November7.

Irwin entered the 2009 season with high expectations, coming off a dissatisfying 2008 season. Unavoidable circumstances plagued last season, but the team never gave up. If anything, the athletes bonded and became stronger individuals and a stronger team. The ‘09 roster increased, and the team mood was very high. Athletes and fans went into the 2009 season feeling good.
The Indians have had an unpredictable first half season. The tribe opened with powerhouse Fitzgerald, and was the first to go down in the books as the Canes work toward their perfect season. The Indians then traveled to a strong Clinch County team and brought home a well-played victory. Traveling to Berrien the third week, the tribe again felt if they played hard, a victory would be theirs. But in the closing seconds of the game, the Rebels scored to defeat the Indians 26 to 25. The following two weeks the Indians were victorious over Portal and Turner scoring a combined total of 90 points. Coming off their strong win over Turner, the Indians entered the Hawkinsville game with confidence and were leading at half time. Control of the game was given up in the fourth quarter for a disappointing loss to the Red Devils.
The Indians are entering the last five weeks of the regular season with a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 in region. With region games against Twiggs, Telfair, Dooly, and Wilcox remaining on the schedule, their work is cut out for them. They can win these games with the talent and dedication that is on this team.
On the offensive side of the ball, Kevious Robinson and Bernard Baker are running the ball well; each has had numerous 100-plus yards per game. Jake Atkinson helps with running and is quarterback Clint Paulk’s primary receiver with Travis Tucker making some clutch catches also. The offensive line plays to get the job done; leading the way are big Terrence Woodard, Chandler Rowe, Joe Ben Wright, and Darius Battle.
Defensively, Fred Marshall, Bradley Tucker, Eric Lawton, Kenny Richardson and Tony Woodard do not retreat; these five do not slow down until they get to the opponent. There are good feelings for the Indians’ second half of the season. The team is very capable of getting the job done as the Indians possess all the qualities to have a winning season and do well in Region 2A.

Irwin County Lady Indians Softball
by Head Coach Franklin Sumner
The ladies set a goal each year to make the final tournament held in Columbus. Only the best eight softball teams in each classification play for the state title. The 2003 team made that state tournament in the seven years of fast pitch. The Lady Indians are in the East half of Region 2-A; we play the entire season to place us in the region tournament.
In the 2008 season, we finished second to Bacon County, which was a very tough team that did go on to the Final Eight in Columbus. They are strong again this year with their entire team returning.
We are at the halfway point of our season, and have played all teams in our region. Our only loss has been to Bacon County. They won 3-2; our two errors gave them two unearned runs. We play all teams again the second half to be seated for the region tournament.
This season, the Indians’ defense has improved greatly from last year and our defense is probably our strong suit. The girls have been getting timely hits and our three pitchers are pitching well.
The Lady Indians are led by five experienced seniors. Jena Fussell starts at third base and is our number three hitter in the lineup. She has anchored third down, but plays shortstop if needed. Kelsey Graham starts in left field and has done a great job out there; she has really improved her defense and hitting. Kelsey bats in the ninth hole, like a second lead-off, with her good speed. Christy Mixon plays right field and has made some big plays in taking away some hits by throwing them out at first. Her bat is hot right now and she has been bringing runners home in the middle of the order. Deven Russell can play outfield and second base. She has been hitting with confidence and has made great improvements like the hit vs. Echols County. Jana Smith, our catcher, has done a great job behind the plate receiving the pitches and controlling the game. She struggled with her bat at the beginning of the season, but it has come around and she is gaining confidence by getting some big hits.
The junior class is made up of four players. Pitcher Brittany Allen has already pitched a one-hitter. She also plays second or third when she’s not on the mound. Her bat has been stronger this year and she has had some big game-winning hits for us. Chrissie Martin plays right field. She has improved defensively and in the batter’s box. Savanna Wright anchors down centerfield; many times she looks like the fifth infielder since she plays in so often. She dares the hitters to hit it over her head and has only been burned one time this year. She bats second in the lineup, hitting with confidence, and has done a great job moving runners up. Kaylee Wynn has burning speed and is our lead-off lady. She can play anywhere in the infield and probably has the softest hands on the team.
There are six sophomores on the team. Jessica Cook, another of our young pitchers, has already thrown a no-hitter vs Echols County. She had a perfect game for four innings before walking a batter. When not pitching, Jessica plays short, and she has a lot of power in her swing. Chasity Golden has done a great job catching and is probably the most improved player on the team this year. She has been hitting great and also had some game-winning hits for us. Lauren Mobley is also a pitcher, and has pitched some big games for us like defeating Brunswick in the Baconton tournament to put us in first place. She has improved her hitting and can play third if needed. Kenslee Moore is another runner with burning speed; she runs in all games either for the catcher or pitcher and has recorded several stolen bases. She also plays outfield at either position and has a very strong arm. Gabi Parker plays outfield and has a great attitude on and off the field. With her determination and hard work she improves each year. Jakiedra Pruitt, our first baseman, has really done an outstanding job for us offensively and defensively. She bats number four and has put many extra-base hits in the book. Jakiedra leads the team with triples.
I am very pleased with our freshman class. Maegan Aldridge pitches for JV and continues to improve each outing. Casey Anderson can play any position and has great speed, but is out for the season with Mononucleosis. Leigh Fuller is our regular shortstop on JV. She has a strong arm and can play outfield if needed. Leigh has really been hitting the ball as well. Kady Lankford plays first base and outfield for the JV, and is improving each outing. Hallie Lotts joined our program this year and is our first on the JV. She is our only team member who bats left-handed.
The Lady Indians look strong going into the second half of the season and moving into the region tournament. We probably have the deepest bullpen that we have ever had. With a well-balanced bench and proven hitters throughout the lineup, I feel the Lady Indians look to be a major player in the region and hopefully in the state tournament.

Irwin Indians Football
Seven starters return on an offense led by quarterback Clint Paulk, who has the size and ability to see the whole field. Look for big plays from the back field with their size and speed. Depth is being established in the offensive line. The line will look toward Joe Ben Wright with his ability and good technique to lead.
There are ten returning starters on defense. LB/DB Fred Marshall returns after leading the team in tackles last season and DB Jake Atkinson led the region with interceptions. These two have the ability to change a game's momentum at any time. The defensive line looks sound. Experienced DL Terrance Woodard, weighing over 300 pounds with great feet, will be leading the way for the defense to emerge
The Indians had a difficult 2008 season. Sometimes the right decisions are difficult for a team, but the right decisions make a positive team for the future. Look for the Indians to gain momentum and excel in 2009 and beyond.

Lady Indians Softball
The 2009 Team set their goals at the end of the ‘08 season. The team said, "We have set our goals high and will work hard to achieve each goal." Coach Sumner and the team plan to do well in Region 1A, do well in the sectionals, and be one of the teams in the Final Eight tournament in Columbus. The girls are aware their region is extremely strong again and their opponents are ready to play ball, also. The Lady Indians have decided they will toil harder, play harder and accomplish their goals one week at a time as a team! Watch for a very determined team of Lady Indians to hit the softball parks this season.

Irwin's Red Hots
The team has great expectations for 2009. Leading the way are eight strong, experienced seniors. Completing the squad with young and very talented girls, the entire squad has exhibited the determination and rigid work ethic necessary to accomplish their ambitions. This season is off to a good beginning with solid work, fortitude, dedication and enthusiasm. ICHS is looking for a great season from the Red Hots, who are under the leadership of veteran head coach Jeannie Pujadas and assistant Jessica McCurdy.
