Canes Baseball

The Canes baseball team split two games the latter part of April, running their season record to 16-7 and their Region 1AA record to 7-5.  The Canes locked up a playoff berth and entered the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed out of Region 1AA.

On Tuesday, April 20, the Canes travelled to Nashville to take on the Berrien County Rebels.  The Rebels, behind an excellent pitching performance by Tyler Cowart, defeated the Canes by a score of 5-0.  The Canes could only muster two hits: a double by Matt Taylor and a single by Kade Poole.  The losing pitcher was Kurt Brown who pitched 5 innings giving up five runs on five hits, three walks, one hit batter and six strikeouts. The Canes committed one error.  Chip Bowen pitched the final inning giving up no runs and no hits.

“We just couldn’t get our bats going against a very effective pitcher.  I thought Kurt pitched well enough to win, but we just didn’t give him the run support,” said head coach Jason McDonald

On Thursday, April 22, Fitzgerald took the trip down to Thomasville to take on the Bulldogs and try to avenge a loss from earlier in the season.  The Canes came away with an 11-1 victory in five innings.  The winning pitcher was Andrew Herlovich. He pitched all five innings and gave one unearned run on four hits and no walks.  The Canes committed three errors.  The leading hitters for the Canes were Taylor, three for four with a double and a three-run homerun; Alan Sandiford, two for three with a three-run homerun; Brown, two for three; and Poole, two for two.

The scoring for Fitzgerald began in the third inning when Poole led off the inning with a walk.  Tevin Stewart-Gaulden then walked to place runners at first and second before Taylor drilled a pitch over the left centerfield wall for a three-run homer.  Back-to-back singles by Sandiford and Herlovich placed runners again at first and second.  Tanner Free entered the game as the courtesy runner for the catcher.  The next batter, Bowen, laid down a bunt that resulted in Tanner being thrown out at third.  Brandon Cannon then reached on an error by the shortstop allowing Herlovich to score.

In the fourth inning, Stewart-Gaulden and Taylor both singled before Sandiford stepped to the plate and drilled a 1-0 fastball over the right centerfield wall for another three-run homer.

In the fifth inning, Brown led off with a single and Jacob Walker followed with a bunt single.  Poole then laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error by the third baseman allowing Brown to score.  Stewart-Gaulden reached on a fielder’s choice before Taylor delivered a two-RBI double to score Walker and Stewart-Gaulden.  After Herlovich reached on a walk, Bowen singled to left to score Taylor for the final run of the game.

“This was an important win for us, because it locked us in as the No.3 seed out of our region for the state playoffs.  We hit the ball well and took advantage of the opportunities that Thomasville gave us.  We didn’t play well at all the first time we played them, so we felt like we had something to prove.  I’m proud of the way our guys came out and took care of business.” said Coach McDonald.

The Canes closed out their regular season on Tuesday, April 27, with a 29-1 win over the Mitchell County Eagles on Senior Night.  Before the game, a ceremony was held to honor the five senior baseball players for the Canes this year: Chip Bowen, Kurt Brown, Brandon Joiner, Alan Sandiford and Jacob Walker. The 2010 senior class has compiled a record of 73-30-1 including a Region 1AA championship in 2007.  They have also advanced to the state playoffs all four years.

The winning pitcher versus Mitchell County was Brown.  He pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits, one walk and six strikeouts.  Cannon pitched the final inning striking out two.  The leading hitters for the Canes were Joiner, three for four; Stewart-Gaulden, two for two with a double; Herlovich, two for two; Bowen, two for two with two triples; and Free, two for two with a triple.

“It was great to get a big win like this on Senior Night.  I’m proud of our five senior players. They’ve been a big reason for the success we’ve had over the past years,” said Coach McDonald.

The Cane’s game against Cook County on Friday, April 30, was cancelled due to rain and will not be made up.

The team advanced to the first round of playoffs, losing to Central of Macon.  After losing five seniors who were starters, the team needs the younger players to step up next year to fill these shows and take on these roles.

Hot practices, long speeches, and sweaty t-shirts make for a great track team, and that is also an accurate description of the Fitzgerald High track program. FHS track have had a great season, all from their determination and perseverance. Coach Schoultz and Coach Nobles have both said they couldn’t be more proud of the team and their dedication this year.

They claimed first place in the first Fitzgerald Relays held April 16. Thrower Matt Day got things started off for the Canes with a second-place finish in discus followed with the boys 4x100 relay by David Gallagher, Tolerance Shepherd, Nic Williams and Harold Summers; the 4x400 meters by Gallagher, Rashid Stepherson, Henry Carter and Mark McCloud; the distance medley by McCloud, Stepherson, Carter, and Mike Hobby; and the sprint medley by Williams, Shepherd, Gallagher, and McCloud.

The Canes also placed third in the 4x100 meter run by Ron Neal, Josh Caro, Jihmel Terrel and D.J. Searcy; 4x400 meter relay by Demetric Johnson, Carl Dykes, Stepman Stephans and Cody McDonald;  and the 800-meter sprint medley by Johnson, Stephans, Carter and Jared Jones.

In individual events, David Gallagher won the 200-meter dash and Tolerance Shepherd (100m) and Nic Williams (200m) brought home fourth-places finishes.

The 2010 regional meet proved to bring success to the FHS track team as well. The boys relay team placed first in region along with fellow teammate Antressa Simmons who ran the 400 meters.

The Last Goal

The Canes soccer team has been working hard this year, and it has paid off. Despite the number of teammates, the Canes are extremely close and very supportive of each other. The boys are normally easy-going guys, but when that eight-minute buzzer sounds the opposing team had better watch out. The boys have speed and teamwork on their side.

Since last month’s issue of In The Game, the boys played Dodge County, defeating them in a hard-fought competition. They then hosted Central of Macon, a heartbreaking loss by the slim margin of 2-1.

Fitzgerald then hosted Dodge County, handily defeating them by a score of 8-1. The next contest for the Canes was Bleckley (hosted by the Canes on April 9), a game they lost 6-3. On April 13, the team traveled to Crisp County where they won by a narrow margin of 1-0. At press time the team was playing host to their arch rival, the Irwin County Indians.

One Last Farewell
by Ashley Harper

It seems like only yesterday when the girls of the Lady Canes soccer team were running laps to condition for the rigorous season that was in store for them, but now it is April and that season has come and gone. Coach Lee Dorsett notes that he is very proud of the progress the girls have made since day one. The Lady Canes welcomed 14 new rookies this year, some of whom had never watched a soccer game, much less played in one. But they overcame that small impediment, which was no small feat.

Practice, perseverance and determination took the team who was once disorganized and combative to a team of unity and love. Even though this statement sounds corny, the players of the Lady Canes soccer are now just that – ladies. They stayed classy both on the field and off, being role models for others by setting the example that there is not one stereotypical girls soccer player.

The Lady Canes soccer team consists of cheerleaders, dance line members, basketball players, tennis players and all other different variety of people and backgrounds. The girls had to reach deep inside themselves to put aside all other issues and come together for the purpose of being a better team.

Throughout the month of March, each individual Lady Cane was struggling to find her exact niche on the team. Playing the Dodge County Lady Indians, the Central Macon Lady Chargers and the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs, the girls were suffering losses but were determined to break out of that cycle. On March 30, the Canes turned things around with the victory of the Atkinson County Rebelletes. That game defined the girls and proved to them that with hard work and cooperation they could definitely be something more.

The Lady Canes played Dodge for the second time on April 1 and succeeded in putting the ball in the back of the net, along with a great defense stopping anything coming their way. On April 9, the girls played Bleckley again, and despite the progress the Canes had made, the maturity of the other team got the better of them.

The last game of the season was against the rival of all FHS sports – the Irwin County Indians. Unfortunately, the scores were not available at press time. The 2010 Lady Canes came out a better, closer team through the trials and tribulations of the season. The seniors’ only hopes are to pass that unity down to the next team so that they can take the title next year.

Lady ‘Canes Set Sights High

After graduating seven starters in 2009, the Fitzgerald Lady ‘Canes soccer team has brought on 12 rookies in hopes of creating a greater team. Seniors Mary Claire Foster, Berenice Montezuma, Rasheka Hatcher, Leigha Stone, Ashley Harper, Keyonna Mitchell and Shamirra Wilcox are leading the team towards unity for a higher purpose.  These girls have grown closer during each practice and love to laugh and joke together, but don’t let their lighthearted nature lead you to think they aren’t serious – these girls are in it to win it.

Captain Mary Claire and co-captain Berenice took their official place in the center of the field during Fitzgerald’s first home game of the season against the Atkinson County Rebels on February 23.  After a friendly scrimmage on the infamous astroturf field of the Valdosta Wildcats the Wednesday before, playing the Rebels was a thrill to watch as the Lady ‘Canes scored three points in the first half and only allowed one.  After halftime, the girls played more physically and racked up some great minutes with two more goals. The final buzzer sounded with a 5-1 victory in favor of the Lady ‘Canes.

On Friday, February 26, the girls headed to Howard to play their first regional game. Coach Lee Dorsett, who has proudly coached the girls soccer team for three years, played all the girls in different positions so everyone could get a good feel of how each individual job on the field worked together to make a team. Overall, the ‘Canes played more physically and competitively than they ever had before. Even though they didn’t win the match, the girls came home with their heads held high.

FHS Tennis Has Solid Start

The Fitzgerald High School boys and girls tennis teams leapt right into the 2010 season, which began February 11 with their first match against Appling County. Following that game they played Lowndes, Valdosta and Bleckley County, prior to both teams winning their first region match 5-0 against Early County.  During the game against Thomasville, the boys defeated the Bulldogs 5-0.

The boys team is still rallying for varsity positions, but heading off the girls team is senior Stephanie Register, senior Katie Gordon at No. 2 singles, and junior Shelby Ward at No. 3 singles. The FHS girls No. 1 doubles team is made up of Haley and Jenna Gilleland, both juniors, with junior Andrea Smith and sophomore Rebekah Foster at the No. 2 doubles position.

Wrestlers Stand Out At State
by Brice Garrett

After snow days and delays, the state wrestling tournament finally rolled around.  This “big dance” included the top 32 teams in the state, and the top four from each area combined to form the bracket.

For the first time in three years, the Fitzgerald High School wrestling team had representatives on the medal stand.

Placing fifth at state was Ostley Neal, a four-year letterman and two-time Area Champion. Next was junior Brice Garrett, a three-year letterman and three-year Area Champion, who placed sixth in the 152 weight division.  The final medalist was Dikito Champ, a letterman for three years and a two-time Area Champion. Dikito finished his career by placing fourth in the 285 weight division.

The ‘Canes will graduate four seniors and plan to return 10 starters.

At Fitzgerald High School, the days are going by faster than they can be counted.  February has come and gone, and the whole school is feeling the March Madness, especially the Purple Hurricane basketball team. On January 23, the ‘Canes played the Cook Hornets where top scorers Latravious Stewart and Demetrius Lewis tore up the court.

Next they played their long-time rivals once again, this time without the comfort of the home advantage. On January 29, the ‘Canes headed to Irwin County to battle the Indians and came out victorious. Seniors Latravious Stewart and Nic Williams and junior Tevin Stewart-Gaulden burned up the court and helped the ‘Canes to their 56-38 victory. The next day they played the Albany Indians at home, winning 50-44.

The ‘Canes played Mitchell County in the first match-up of February, and seniors Steve Hughes and Latravious Stewart showed their talent. The ‘Canes then hosted the Brooks County Trojans in their last home game of the season on February 5, and senior players Latravious Stewart, Kurt Brown, Steve Hughes, Mike Hobby, Demetrius Lewis and Nic Williams were honored. The seniors left it all out on the court; all their work paid off and the ‘Canes walked away with their heads held high as the scoreboard flashed a score of 36-vistors, 42-home.

Coach Cooper hasn’t given up hope and feels that the boys can make this a better season yet. With hard work and determination, the ‘Canes will come through. As a team, the boys are excited for what lies ahead and are geared up to see the season end successfully.  Go ‘Canes!

Every team needs a leader, and the Fitzgerald High School girls basketball team has three who are playing their final season for the Lady ‘Canes. Seniors Keyanna Mitchell, Shamirra Wilcox and India Williams were honored during the Senior Night ceremony on February 5 when the girls played their last game as Lady ‘Canes in the Mike Ellis gymnasium against Brooks County. The Lady Trojans were definitely stiff competition, and the Lady ‘Canes played a hard game.

Coach Bryan commented: “The game was much closer than the score. I am very proud of our girls for not backing down from a very physical Brooks County. Our seniors have shown great leadership for us all year long, and they are going to be very hard to replace.”

Three days before, the Lady ‘Canes hosted Mitchell County, and together they made a very exciting game. Coach Bryan said, “Our girls played hard. We held a third-quarter lead and had a chance to win at the end.”  The top performers of the game were senior Keyanna Mitchell and sophomore DeeNesha Carter.

On January 8, the Lady ‘Canes traveled to Adel to play the Cook High Lady Hornets. Top scorers were Keyanna Mitchell, Shamirra Wilcox and Yasmaine Pruitt.

As their hard-played season comes to an end, the Lady ‘Canes look back with no regrets. Even though they are losing three great players, the seniors are leaving their mark with the hopes that next year will be even better.

Wrestling Season Draws to a Close

For the first time in four years, Fitzgerald played host to the annual area wrestling tournament. The team was well-represented as it produced six Area Champions.

Next came three wins from consecutive weight classes; Henry Carter (140), Ostley Neal (145) and Brice Garrett (150). Chip Bowen clinched the next championship for the 171 weight class and Dikito Champ found himself atop the podium in the heavyweight division. All four seniors (Carter, Neal, Bowen and Champ) walked out of the Mike Ellis gymnasium for the last time as champions.

As for team scores, the ‘Canes lost to Cook High by four points. Others who placed at the tournament were Pedro Martinez, Larry Stewart, DJ Smith, Andre Magwood, Kean Kittrell, Devasco Price, Joe Stanford and Gustavis Martin.

The ‘Canes basketball team is pushing through this year. Rival Irwin County Indians came to Fitzgerald on December 18 and participated in one of the most nail-biting games of the season. The teams constantly fought for the ball with the ‘Canes coming out on top and a final score of 49-46. Top scorers were senior Latravius Stewart and junior Tevin-Stewart Gaulden.

On December 19, the Canes attended the Randall Godfrey Christmas Classic hosted by Lowndes High where they played the Lowndes High Vikings, the Coffee High Trojans, and the Clinch County Panthers. Latravius Stewart and Tevin Stewart-Gaulden were the top scorers of the 51-34 win.

From December 28-30, the Canes played in the Jeff Davis Christmas Tournament in which they contended against the Dodge County Indians and the Wayne County Yellow Jackets.  Mikell Lampkin and Latravius Stewart were the top scorers in the 46-39 victory.

January 5, the Canes played the Turner County Rebels at Turner County.

The season is underway, and the boys are ready to rumble. So hear the siren and feel the wind because basketball season is here again!

Hurricane Wrestling

As the seasons have changed from fall to winter, so have the changing of the guards in Fitzgerald sports. Wrestling has arrived, and the ‘Canes are starting to thrive.

About midway through this season, Fitzgerald's crew has found themselves a much better team from last season. They are led by seniors Chip Bowen, Ostley Neal, Henry Carter and Dekito Champ.

Duals and tournaments have flown by and the ‘Canes have been very successful. Their most recent action was Area duals hosted by Cook High on January 9. In the semifinals, Cook defeated Brooks and Fitzgerald toppled Berrien. The finals were another rematch in the heated rivalry between these schools. It was nail-biter, but Fitzgerald left broken hearted as they lost 39-38.

State duals are next in Macon; soon after will be a few last-second tournaments and then the traditional Area tournament. Last year the ‘Canes were the victor at this one and are searching for a repeat. Area will be hosted by the purple warriors at Mike Ellis Gym and is sure to bring excitement.

Hurricane Football
by Brice Garrett

After becoming only the seventh team in school history to start a season 10-0, the Purple Hurricane tackled the playoffs. In the first round, the Canes played the No.4 seed from Region 4 AA, Greene County. The Canes quickly started the game on defense and found themselves playing from behind the first time all season. Fitzgerald’s offense quickly picked up the slack by scoring 42 unanswered points. Greene County wouldn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter. The final was 42-21 in favor of Fitzgerald.

Swainsboro was the opponent for round two. This game started similar, but the Canes found themselves with a 23-7 lead. Injuries and turnovers plagued them, however, and the game became a nail-biter. The halftime score was 23-21 and would have been tied had the Canes not converted two, two-point conversions. After a heart-to-heart speech, the Hurricanes erupted in the second half to blow away the Swainsboro Tigers. The last second ticked by with another Hurricane victory, 64-36.

Round three was between the Canes and Callaway High’s Cavaliers. Home field advantage would come to a coin toss. Senior halfback “Tweety” Stewart advised Hurricane coaches what to call, and the Canes won the toss. Jaycee Stadium was host to yet another competitive team and this game started with a swarm of purple. The Canes defense stumped Callaway for several drives until the Canes converted to a spread offense. On the other side of the ball, the Canes were thriving as well. Nonetheless, this game was a dog fight after two converted onside kicks fell in Callaway favor. The end result was familiar, however, as Purple reigned victorious, 35-21.

The semifinal matchup brought Buford to Fitzgerald. Thousands of people crowded this small town for the 7:30 kickoff. Buford drew first blood, but the Canes retaliated with two scores of their own. A nail-biter was underway as Buford held a seven-point margin at the half. Entering the late fourth quarter, the score was tied 28-28. The final, however, fell in Buford favor 38-28.

The Canes ended their season at home with a 13-1 record as Region Champion. They also had 13 players elected to First Team All-Region, seven on offense and six on defense; 10 to the Second Team All-Region, seven on offense and three on defense; and another four to Honorable Mention.

A disappointed ending closes out this fairytale season. Now the offseason begins.

Pat Riley once said, "Great effort springs naturally from great attitude," and the 2009 edition of the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes basketball team have a great attitude. Many of our players, including seniors Latravius Stewart, Steve Hughes, Michael Hobby and Kurt Brown, are still hyped from football season and eager to jump feet first into basketball.

Head coach Sultan Cooper is drilling, practicing and whipping these boys into Category 5 Hurricanes. This is his first year coaching Canes basketball, and he couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the season. He is taking the boys back to the basics and teaching them the fundamentals of the game. Going into triple overtime, the Canes walked away with their heads held high after losing to the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets, 61-57.

“We have a lot of returning starters, so I’m optimistic about this year. I’m just ready to see it unfold,” Coach Cooper said about the season.

Competition Cheerleading
by Coach Christy Jacobs

The Fitzgerald high school competitive cheerleading team has finished up a great year which marks their eighth consecutive year as region champs.

The team is made up of two seniors, five juniors, seven sophomores and four freshmen. They knew at the beginning of the season that it would involve a lot of work and time spent on fundamentals. Along with being young, they started the season with several injuries and complications. Against all odds, the Purple Girls have had a successful season.

The first competition took place at Lowndes High School where the Purple Girls claimed their first 1st Place trophy of the season. As they continued and competed in Effingham, Vidalia, Fitzgerald and Sylvester, the team continued to succeed and place. At Effingham, they claimed the prize of Grand Champion.

This year the team was led by Coach Christy Jacobs and Kristie Gibbs. As the team will only lose two seniors, they are excited and looking forward to the year ahead.

Both of Fitzgerald’s cross country teams finished the year in grand style.

The women’s team placed second in region, which was run at Kolomokee Mounds State Park, and earned the right to participate in the championship meet. Leading the team to a second place finish was Antresa Simmons with a time of 25:43.41. Other team members include Jo Leigh Warren, 28:45.26; Bria McAllister, 28:58.97; Katie Howell, 29:15.45; AJ Hancock, 29:41.47; and Cara Kimbrell, 34:30.75. Although two former (late 70s) FHS women’s teams worked for a second place region finish, none have ever made the trek to north Georgia to compete at this level.

“This is a very young team made up of ninth- and tenth-grade athletes with little experience running this distance. I credit the success they have experienced at the high school level to the program they came from at the middle school. Cheryl Turnmire, the head middle school coach, does a fantastic job with these young people. They come up to me with the knowledge of what cross country entails and what it takes to be a distance runner. The only difference is the distance. They go from two miles to 3.1. It is a big adjustment,” states head coach Lynn Howell.

The men’s team finished first in region, earning the title of Region Champion.  Not since1978 has a Canes cross country team claimed the region championship. Leading the men’s team to victory was Daniel Chavez, who had an individual second place finish with a time of 17:54.02, and Mark McLeod, with an individual third place finish with a time of 18:46.63. Other top finishers for the team include Pedro Martinez, 19:17.86; Justin Braddy, 20:31.01; Mike Hobby, 20:34.27; Adam Wiggins, 20:52.86; and Jose Muniz, 21:16.17.

For the first year ever, both teams participated in the cross country state championship held in Carrollton, Georgia. This is a grueling 5K course in the north Georgia hills that is challenging to even the best of runners. Both teams met the challenge and came out the better for it. The runners learned about competition at the next level and also about themselves. They pulled the strength and will from deep within to do their best. This is made clear when you compare the times they run on a relatively flat course at region competition to the hills on the Carrollton course. It takes hard work.

Every year the team has a different motto on the back of their team shirts. This year the motto is: In a world of give and take, winners give what it takes. “I do not think we could have had anything any more appropriate with this group of athletes this year. They have really given what it takes to be the winners that they all are,” says Coach Howell.

The Purple Hurricane Ravages Region
by Brice Garrett

On November 23, Fitzgerald took their undefeated record into a hostile Quitman, Georgia, to play a pivotal region game. The Brooks County Trojans had only one blemish on their record as they had lost previously to Thomasville.   On the second play of scrimmage, the Canes had a defensive bust, and Brooks’ All-State halfback exploded 70 yards down to the Hurricane 10-yard line. After a gut check, the defense held to a fourth and long situation. As the Trojans lined for a field goal attempt, the Canes quickly spotted it as a fake and swarmed before the pass was completed.   The Hurricane offense then drove 90 to take a seven point lead. The Trojans retaliated with a drive of their own and tied the battle. Not to be outdone, the Hurricane drove and put 14 unanswered points on the board. The second half was a defensive showdown, and the score remained the same as water coolers were dumped and spirits were high.

The next week was homecoming in Fitzgerald as Albany High traveled in. The Canes received the kickoff and scored on the first play. Then they kicked off, recovered a fumble and scored the ensuing play. After intercepting a pass, the Canes ended the first half up 21-0 within 55 seconds of the starting time. The rest of the game was a blur as the buzzer sounded with a 48-6 victory.

The region championship game was next as No.7-ranked Thomasville made their way to Jaycee Stadium. They had scored similarly in every region game, and this game week was highly anticipated. The first few series of plays were slow for both teams.  Fitzgerald drew first blood with a long run. The Bulldogs ensuing drive turned to a pick six for the Hurricanes. However, Thomasville didn't lie down but instead drove and scored. A couple of series later, the Canes had a 28-14 lead as the half ended. The story remained the same for the Canes defense as they held Thomasville from scoring again; their counterpart faired differently. Fitzgerald claimed the region title with a 49-14 win.

The Hurricane offense has been led by running backs known as the "four horsemen" who ran behind an offensive line of mules. The passing game has been highlighted for the gunslinger and his right and left hand men at receiver and tight end. On the other side of the ball, this Hurricane defense has swarmed like piranhas. The jungle of a team ended the regional season with a 10-0 record and is raging and anticipating their first round game against Greene County. The playoffs have begun, and now the dance begins.

Cross Country
by Nate Hall

The FHS Purple Hurricanes cross country team has competed in several meets so far this season and made several achievements since the Tift County Invitational.

Daniel Chavez leads the boys’ team, and placed in the Top 10 in the Albany meet. The top seven runners are Daniel Chavez, Mark McLeod, Mike Hobby, Pedro Martinez, Andre Magwood, Robin Riehle, and Justin Braddy. Mike Hobby has been out for three weeks due to illness, so he has not been able to run many meets.

At the Westover Invitational on October 3, 2009, several athletes received a personal record for the season: Daniel Chavez, 17:42; Mark McLeod, 18:05; Jose Munez, 20:21; and Andre Magwood, 20:09. The boys are currently in first for region.

The girls’ cross country team is led by Antresa Simmons, who continues to be number one for the team and met her personal goal of 24:21 earlier in the year.

The girls’ team now has five runners, including Antressa Simmons, JoLeigh Warren, Katie Howell, and AJ Hancock. Cara Kimbrell is currently out with a knee injury, but plans to be back soon. The ladies are in third in region and continue to improve.

“We are looking to finish the year strong at the region competition in Early County and can, hopefully, advance to the state level in early November,” commented Coach Howell.

Play on Purple, Play on
by Brice Garrett

On the eve of September 25, Jaycee Stadium was host to the first region game of Region 1-AA in the 2009 season. The Canes took the field against the Mitchell County Eagles. The game would be the first of seven consecutive region games. After 48 minutes of action, the Canes remained undefeated after topping the Eagles 54-12. The defense allowed the first six points late in the second quarter and didn’t allow any more until the final minutes of the second half. The squad scored in various ways including returning the opening kickoff for six points and several defensive scores.

The ensuing week, the team went on the road to Adel to take on the Cook High Hornets. Unlike the previous four games, this one was a nail-biter. Through the first 24 minutes of play, the Purple Hurricanes held a slim 7-6 lead. Coming out of the half, the Canes returned yet another kickoff to jump out to a 14-7 lead. Near the end of the third quarter however, the Cane end zone was penetrated on a controversial call. This would be the last time the Hornets came within 20 yards of scoring. The Canes exploded in the fourth quarter, scoring 28 unanswered points to finish the game.

October rolled in and the Purple Hurricanes returned to Jaycee Stadium to compete against the Berrien Rebels. This game, similar to the Cook County game, started slowly for the Hurricane offense. The first quarter ended 7-0 Fitz, and the offense had only one drive in the quarter. After toil and trouble, the Canes were victorious once again, walking away with a 49-18 score. This was the most the defense had given up all season, yet coaches were pleased as they feel both sides of the ball tackled adversity well.

Thus far, the Purple Hurricanes have scored 339 points and allowed only 42. They are first in the state with an average of 50 points per game, and are allowing seven points per game, which is second to Buford’s sub-six. There hasn’t been an extra point or field goal scored against this team and the special teams have returned two kickoffs for scores.

Early, Brooks, Albany, and Thomasville remain for the team to face in the upcoming weeks. Victories in these games will propel the Canes to a region championship and a top seed in the GHSA playoff brackets. Now the Canes have to prepare mentally and physically for this challenge.

AA Double Threat
by Ashley Harper

Wikipedia defines cheerleading as “a sport that uses organized routines that range from one minute to three minutes made from elements of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to cheer on sports teams at games and matches and/or compete at cheerleading competitions,” but around Ben Hill County, cheerleading is more than that.

Cheerleaders are role models of the younger generation; they are spirit leaders on Friday nights and bring home the glory on Saturday. Cheerleading is about igniting the energy of the crowd, and then there are cheerleading competitions, which are for judging style, precision, and team work. It’s about the hearing the crowd and letting the adrenaline build, and then letting the flyer fly.

After a summer of sweat, heat and hard work, the FHS competitive cheer squad is ready to the hit the mats flipping. Everyday practice and intense efforts paid off graciously when the Purple Girls took first place in the AA region at the Southern Spirit Showdown hosted by Lowndes County High School in Valdosta Saturday, September 26.

Christy Jacobs is taking charge in her first year as head coach. Every girl is giving 100 percent this year including the two seniors, Nashika Brunson and Katie Gordon.

The Purple Girls regrouped themselves on Saturday, October 3 at the Sweet Onion Cheer Classic hosted by Vidalia High School. At press time, the girls were looking forward to bringing it home by hosting the Cheer Blast on October 17.

“We Purple Girls are working hard this year. I’m proud of our efforts and hope and wish for the best. The only thing we can do now is practice, pray, and practice,” noted Katie Gordon.

Purple Pride
by Ashley Harper

“Purple Pride” is evident with a ride down any street in Fitzgerald. The 2009-2010 Hurricanes have big shoes to fill this season as last year’s team advanced to the semifinals of the state playoffs.

Fitzgerald opened the preseason with a trip to Coffee County and a 35-0 victory. For the opening game on Friday August 28, the Canes traveled next door to play long-time rival Irwin County in the annual Border-to-Border Brawl. The boys continued a 10-year tradition with a 48-0 victory over the Indians. Senior Trent Pruitt and sophomore quarterback Kaleb Nobles dominated the field.

The following week had a similar result as the Canes topped Hawkinsville 62-0. After nine consecutive road games, including those from last year, the Hurricanes returned to their beloved Jaycee Stadium for the home opener against Worth County. The Canes kept the crowd cheering with a 49-0 shutout game.

The Hurricanes have scored 159 points this season not including the preseason matchup. Averaging 53 points a game and allowing none, these Canes are looking to maintain steam going into their off week. The region opener will be played in Fitzgerald against Mitchell County, and then the team will travel to Adel to play Cook. With the glamour of the 100th season fading and some mighty, mighty seniors gone, the Canes are holding fast and pushing hard to make this a great season.

Cross Country Update
by Mike Hobby

The FHS Purple Hurricane cross country teams started their seasons on Saturday, September 12 at the Tift County Invitational.  The FHS boys’ team was led by senior Daniel Chavez, who placed third overall with a time of 18:17. The runners finished in the following order: Mark McLeod, Mike Hobby, Pedro Martinez, Andre Magwood, Jose Muniz, Robin Riehle, Adam Wiggins, Justin Braddy, Garrett Griffin, Michael McCrimmon, and Nate Hall. The boys’ team finished fourth out of seven teams.

"I was really proud of our boys’ team. They have trained really hard this year. We were fourth to three bigger schools and first in our classification," said Coach Lyn Howell.
The FHS girls’ team didn't have the five runners to qualify for a team score, but also did really well. Antressa Simmons came in first for the girls’ team, tenth overall, with a time of 24:21. Katie Howell and Cara Kimbrell followed her in. "I was really proud of both teams considering it was the first meet of the season. The girls’ team couldn't fill out a team due to illness or previous obligations, but it was good experience. All of the girls are freshman, so the experience is valuable," said Coach Howell.

Lady Canes Softball
by Ashley Harper

With the Lady Canes Classic tournament behind them, the 2009 Lady Canes softball team is focusing on the upcoming games. They got off to a rocky start but are determined to keep their spirits high. “The team this year is much like an infant learning to walk.  We’ve had to go back to the basics; we are learning to throw, run, catch, and bat. We have a team loaded with freshmen and sophomores. They know the game, it is just a matter of getting them to perform under a lot of pressure,” says Coach Bryan.

The Lady Canes have struggled thus far with only one win; however, they are not discouraged. Coach Bryan says: “We are making improvements every day. Sometimes you have to measure wins and losses not in the final score, but in how the young ladies perform on the field. The biggest struggle for us right now is getting the big hit with runners in scoring position. We get runners on base; we just can’t get them home.”

The Lady Canes are taking it one game at a time, shaking off their losses, and learning from their mistakes. They are refocusing and striving to make it to the playoffs. Win or lose, the community will always love our Lady Canes.

“I am proud of our team. We have worked through some adversity and are a much better team today than when the season started,” says Coach Bryan.

Softball

The Lady Canes started the season off against Jeff Davis on August 17 after hosting their third annual Lady Canes Classic weekend tournament on the 14th and 15th. Their first home game against Ware Magnet on the 18th was followed by the Lady Canes’ attendance at the Blazer Blast Tournament in Jeff Davis over the weekend of August 20-22.

Head coach Roy Bryan is very enthusiastic about this upcoming year. Returning pitchers Suzannah Cravey and Brittanie’ Evans plan on blowing out the completion with speed and precision. Returning seniors Nikki Hogan, Elizabeth Hutto, and Emily Shiver intend to take it all the way this year. These ladies have the school behind them and will always have fans in the stands screaming, “Go Lady Canes, go!!!”

Football

Across the state, school has started back and the anticipation of football season intensifies. Fitzgerald High is no exception as school started July 31, and the boys have been training all summer. Hurricane season is underway, and the town of Fitzgerald is brimming with purple pride in anticipation of an exciting season.

Last year, Fitzgerald's gridiron gang not only made the playoffs but knocked off three high-caliber teams before falling in the semifinals. With the class of 2009 graduation, there were a few starting positions to be filled. The purple swarming defense lost five notable starters and returned six. However, the spots are now held by players who have a great deal of experience being backups to the prolific seniors who left. On the offensive side, three starters moved on, but only time will tell if the underclassmen have what it takes.

The first contest was a scrimmage against Coffee County at the renewed Jardine Stadium in Douglas on August 14 and will be followed by the regular season opener against century-old rival Irwin County on August 28.  Great things are always expected from the Purple Hurricanes, and this year the bar is set even higher. As for how this ‘Canes fairytale will unfold, we’ll have to wait and see.

Cross Country

The 2009 season for the Fitzgerald High School Purple Hurricane cross country team looks to be a promising one. The ‘Canes are returning six of the seven runners Coach Howell took to Carrollton for the state meet. Leading the team will be senior Daniel Chavez, who placed 2nd last year at the region meet. The Hurricanes have six returning seniors: Daniel Chavez, Mark McLead, Mike Hobby, Robin Riehle, Jose Munoz, and Nate Hall. The season begins with the ‘Canes traveling to Tifton on September 12.
