CheerleadersBHS Cheerleaders Looking Forward to Basketball Season
by Jarrett Luke

The Berrien High School cheerleaders have been working hard in practice so they can cheer on their basketball teams this season.  The 2010-2011 BHS basketball cheer squad is coached by head coach Shari Trella.

The basketball cheerleaders are a different squad than the BHS competition squad and the BHS football cheer squad.  The basketball cheer squad consists of Amanda Lawhorn, Abbey Trella, Curtis Newsome, Rebekka Carter, Emily Carter, Jessica Steward, Shaliegne Kaufman, Jordan Eady, Shylo Peacock and Lauren Harrell.

These cheerleaders are very loud and do a great job cheering on their Rebelettes and Rebels. The Rebel Nation needs to support its BHS basketball cheerleaders at the basketball games this season.

Rebels Defeat Jeff Davis on Gridiron, 31-27
by Jarrett Luke

Berrien RebelsThe Berrien High football team traveled to Jeff Davis and came home victorious. The Rebels opened the game by recovering an onside kick. The Rebels then drove the ball down the field to set up Josh Brogdon’s 37-yard field goal to give Berrien an early 3-0 advantage. Jeff Davis then drove the ball down the field to score a touchdown for a 7-3 advantage.  However, Berrien answered right back as Chris Capers returned the kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to give Berrien a 10-7 lead. Jeff Davis then drove the ball back down the field to score a touchdown to take a 14-10 advantage. Berrien once again answered right back on the next play as Tanner Tennison returned the kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to give Berrien a 17-14, first half lead. The Berrien defense chimed in as Treshad Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a touchdown for a 24-14 lead. Jeff Davis then scored a touchdown to close the score 24-21 in favor of Berrien at halftime.

Jeff Davis scored the first touchdown in the second half to take a 27-24 lead. However, the Rebels would not quit as quarterback Ashton Sparks completed a screen pass to Tennison that resulted in a 67-yard touchdown to give Berrien a 31-27 advantage with three and a half minutes to go in the game. With Jeff Davis facing fourth down and 22 yards to go, the Yellow Jackets completed a pass but Tanner McMillan tackled the receiver five yards short of the first down to give the ball back to the Rebels. Berrien then ran out the clock to pick up its first win of the year as the Rebel Nation celebrated.

Rebelettes Advance to Columbus
by Jarrett Luke

Berrien RebelettesThe Berrien High Rebelettes defeated Morgan County in the second round of the state softball playoffs held in Nashville to advance to Columbus and the state finals. The Rebelettes won 1-0 in eight innings in game one. It was a classic pitching duel as both teams were held scoreless through regulation.  Berrien's junior ace pitcher Kristin Morris pitched an 8-inning no-hitter in game one. She picked up her 25th win of the year by striking out 15 Morgan County batters.

Both teams started the extra inning with a runner on second base. Morris struck out all three Morgan County batters to strand that runner on third in the top of the eighth. Berrien scored the only run of the game to win in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs and runners on second and third, Morgan County intentionally walked Abbey Trella. However, Trella reached out on a 2-0 pitch and punched the ball out to center field for a game-winning RBI hit that drove in Bobbi Jo Royals. Leading the Berrien offense was Trella with two hits in game one. Royals, Halee Hiers and Claire Carter all had one hit for the Rebelettes.

Morgan County took an early 1-0 advantage in the second game on a solo homerun in the second inning. Morgan added to its advantage by adding two more runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. However, Berrien would not quit and answered in the sixth inning. Lindsey Young singled with one out. Kristin Morris then hit a two-out RBI double to cut the lead to 3-1. Melvesha Wright came to the plate with Morris on second and hit a deep ball that hit the top of the right field fence but fell back in for an RBI double that cut the Morgan lead to 3-2. Morgan then got out of the jam and went on to win the game, 3-2, forcing a winner-take-all game three in Nashville. Leading the Berrien offense was Morris with two hits. Young, Trella, Wright and Haley Harrell all had one hit for the Rebelettes in game two.

It came down to a decisive third game. Berrien scored first when Hiers made it home on a bases-loaded infield single by Wright in the bottom of the third. Berrien added to its advantage by adding two additional runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Harrell beat out a bunt to start the fourth before Micaela Sumner sacrificed Harrell to second. Royals then burned the right fielder for an RBI double to score Harrell. Hiers then singled home Royals to make the score 3-0. That would be enough offense for ace pitcher Morris. Morgan did avoid the shutout by scoring a run in the fifth, but Morris dominated the game by striking out 11 batters. She picked up her 26th win of the year by pitching seven strong innings for the Rebelettes. Leading the Berrien offense was Royals with four hits. Hiers added two hits while Wright, Carter and Harrell all had one hit each for the Rebelettes.

by Jarrett Luke

The Berrien High softball team traveled to Columbus to compete in the Elite Eight of the state finals and entered the tournament ranked ninth, facing the fourth-ranked North Oconee Titans in the opening game. Berrien came out fired-up and took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning when Lindsey Young and Abbey Trella scored. Kristin Morris had an RBI single.

Berrien added to its lead, scoring another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Claire Carter that scored Melvesha Wright for a 3-0 advantage. Berrien held that lead until the sixth inning when North Oconee scored six runs to come from behind to defeat the Rebelettes by a 6-3 score. Leading the Rebelettes offense was Morris with two hits.

Berrien then faced fifth-ranked Dodge County in its next game and once again struck first when Morris, who doubled to start the second inning, scored on an RBI single by Carter to give Berrien a 1-0 advantage. This time, Berrien used its advantage to upset Dodge, 1-0, in a great pitcher's duel.  Berrien had three hits while Dodge had two hits in the game. Morris pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 11 batters while allowing only two hits. Leading the Berrien offense was Morris, Wright and Carter with one hit each.

The Rebelettes advanced in the state tournament to face second-ranked Union County, which took an early 1-0 advantage on a solo homerun. Berrien came back to tie the score at 1-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by Morris that scored Young (Young made several spectacular defensive plays in the game). Union went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on another solo homer. Union County added to its advantage with an unearned run in the seventh on an outfield error for a 3-1 lead. Berrien put a runner on third in the seventh inning but was unable to score as Union held on to defeat the Rebelettes by a 3-1 score. Leading the Berrien offense were Hiers and Morris with the Rebelettes’ only two hits.  Berrien was eliminated but not before the Rebelettes finished fifth in the state with a 28-8 record.

Berrien was the highest-ranked AA team from South Georgia. Buford, which defeated Berrien in the state championship game in 2007, won its fourth title in a row. Union County, which eliminated the Rebelettes, finished second in the state. Greater Atlanta Christian finished third and North Oconee, which defeated Berrien in the opening game, finished fourth.

The Rebelettes had an outstanding season as they won the region 1-AA championship before defeating Southeast Bulloch and Morgan County in a best-of-three series in Nashville. Rebelettes Prepare for Upcoming Season
by Jarrett Luke photography by Jarrett Luke

Berrien SoftballThe Berrien High softball team is busy preparing for their upcoming season.  The Rebelettes’ five-year title streak in Region 1-AA came to an end last season, but one of their goals is to win the region championship this year.  The young Rebelettes qualified for the state quarterfinals in Columbus last year and another one of their goals is to compete for a state championship.

After losing center fielder Cassie Nix to graduation, Berrien returns eight starters from last season.   Senior Bobbie Jo Royals will return as catcher and senior Lindsey Young will start at shortstop for Berrien.  Senior outfielders Kacy Flesher and Jade Brady complete the group of seniors.  Junior pitcher Kristin Morris will again be on the mound as the Rebelettes’ ace.  Junior first baseman Claire Carter returns in the infield as well as junior second baseman Halee Hiers.  Sophomore third baseman Abbey Trella and sophomore left fielder Melvesha Wright also return for the Rebelettes.  A solid freshman class will provide much depth for Berrien this season.

Berrien has experience on the coaching side with head coach Michelle Jones returning for another season.  Jones was inducted into the Hall of Fame last January.  She has won 456 games, two state championships and 12 region championships.  She coached on the GACA South All-Star team three seasons ago when the Rebelettes last played in the state championship game.  Her assistant coaches are Jarrett Luke and Wayne Jones.

Berrien looked sharp in their preseason scrimmage game as they shut out a very good Jeff Davis team, 5-0.

Berrien Football
The Berrien Rebels football team is excited about the upcoming season and expects to continue their momentum from last year.

In the last game of the 2009 season, the Rebels dominated the Mitchell County Eagles, defeating them by a 48-18 score.  The win was a big one for the Berrien football program as it ended the 5-5 season – their first five-win record since 1995 – and pulled them out of a 14-year slump.  The record also marks the progress of head coach Ryan Branch and his staff in their two years at Berrien High.

Graduating many starters, the returning Rebels worked hard in the offseason to improve on their success.  Berrien enjoyed a great summer as the team played very well in their passing league games and had a great turnout in the weight room.

With higher goals, the Rebels will be looking for a winning season and a playoff berth despite competing in one of the toughest regions in the state.  The Rebels will play hard every play and their never-quit attitude will make them a fun team to watch.
