The Clinch County Lady Panther softball team ended their 2009 season, losing to Echols County 7-3 in the Region 1-A tournament.

The Lady Panthers played their way into the tournament by beating Baconton Charter 12-0. They then lost to sub-region foe Bacon County 20-0, and then beat Randolph-Clay to advance to face Echols County.

"We just weren't consistent enough during the latter part of the season," said Michael Railey, who coached the CCHS girls with Dustin O'Neal. "The girls played hard, and we made some great plays. We just couldn't do that every game."

According to Railey, senior Shaniqua Jones was the standout for the Lady Panthers vs. Echols County, hitting an inside-the-park homer and also a triple, scoring two of the team's three runs. Fellow senior Kelsey Johnson scored Clinch's other run against Echols.

Railey said the East sub-region dominated the double-elimination tournament, held at Valdosta's Freedom Park, with the six east teams finishing in the top six. Clinch (who finished 10-16 overall for the year) eliminated west second-seed Randolph-Clay, and Atkinson County eliminated the West's top seed, Miller County.

Clinch graduates six seniors from this year's squad: Brooklyn Welch, Jones, Alexa and Kelsey Johnson, Marissa Smith, and BetsyAnna Wilson.

FootballHeading into the stretch run of the season, Jim Dickerson's Clinch County Panthers are 4-3 overall, moving into .500 territory for the first time this season with a 40-0 blanking of Lanier County on Homecoming October 9.

The game was scoreless through the first 22 minutes, until the Panthers put up two scores in the final two minutes of the first half.  From that point on, it was all Panthers, who allowed just 116 total offensive yards on the night.

“It took us a while, but once we got rolling, we got a lot of confidence,” said Dickerson. “It was a great, great Homecoming. I thought our defense was stellar throughout the game.”

Despite three losses, the Panther defense has been stellar most of the year, only giving up over two touchdowns in a game once (a season-opening 38-0 loss to Charlton County). Since then, the Panthers lost to Irwin County 14-7, beat Randolph-Clay 27-15, beat Calhoun County 40-0, lost 7-0 to Miller County, and beat Bacon County 33-6.

FootballThe Panthers are 4-1 in Region 1-A play, but, more importantly, 2-0 in East sub-region action. If they beat their final two sub-region opponents –Atkinson County on October 16 and Pelham on October 30, they will play for the region title on November 6 at either Seminole County or Miller County.

"We're still working hard to get better, but we've been beset by injuries this year," said Dickerson. "That hasn't helped. And offensively, we've been slow to find ourselves. But I truly believe that we are getting better and will be a good football team by the end of the season."

Offensively, the Panthers are led by senior All-State quarterback Vintavious Cooper (5’10”, 195), who has passed for 486 yards and four touchdowns in seven games. Junior back Anthony McNeil has 613 yards rushing to lead the team (8.2 yards per carry), while fellow junior Trey Dorsey has 338 yards rushing (6.9 yards per carry) thus far this year.

Defensively, senior tackle Keith Paisley (6’1”, 245) has 42 tackles to lead the squad, while senior tackle Daniel Spivey (5’11”, 190) and junior linebacker Zack Thomas (6’1”, 220) have 32 stops each.
